Good old fashioned fun

After peeling my second son Marc off the computer and his favourite game, he and I had a great time together today. My daughter, Julia, also joined in on the fun in her own, unique way.  The weather in Melbourne has been spectacular this summer, as the days are warm and bright, and the nights cool and mild. I love the sunshine and spending time in the great outdoors and today was no exception.  I am very happy to say that today we had some good old fashioned fun!

For over half of my life, I have been the proud owner of a German Shepherd.  I have a great affection for this breed of dog and can't really imagine myself ever having anything else.  They are the most noble, intelligent, affectionate, athletic animal and I think they're just wonderful.  For many years, we had 2 dogs, Jack and his sister Kimba, and they have always been a big part of the family.  Sadly, only recently, our female Shepherd, Kimba, passed away just before her 13th birthday.  We miss her very much but we still do have her brother, Jack, with us and he is fighting fit.

Today I really wanted to go on a walk and take Jack as it was such a nice day.  Marc was very excited about this and insisted that he give Jack a wash and a brush before we went.  I encouraged this because I think that this is a simple, yet important job and I want to foster in my children and pass on my love of animals to them. So Marc got busy, washing and brushing Jack and he sure was one fluffy puppy by the time we had finished!  Jack just loved the attention and walked around all day with a big smile on his face........yes, I do believe that animals smile when they are happy, you can see it on their faces.

Julia didn't want to miss out on the fun and as soon as the hose was turned on, she thought that this was wonderful.  She never misses an opportunity to get wet and play with the water.  It's always a battle though when it's time to turn the tap off.  In a few more months, I'll get her started in swimming lessons and she is going to think that this is just the best!

When our fun was done outside, Marc, Jack and I set off on our walk.  We live in a great part of Melbourne that is surrounded by natural wetlands and the beauty of it is that after just a short walk, you feel as though you are in the wilderness, and have to remind yourself that you are only about 20kms out of the city of Melbourne.  The amount of nature that surrounds us is fantastic and we headed down to a nearby creek that is jam packed full of bird life.  Marc always enjoys feeding the ducks and I'm sure the ducks were glad to see us too!

As I was walking in the sunshine with man's best friend at my side, I watched ahead as my beautiful son rode his bike with such vigour and enthusiasm. I could see the birds, the trees and the water around me.  There was not a cloud in the sky, the sun was shining bright and there was a cool breeze.  Taking all of this in and thinking about my daughter playing under the hose in the backyard at home on a glorious summer's day, reminded me of the simple things in life, the fact that the simple things in life are often the best.  I was living and loving every minute of today and thoroughly enjoying some good old fashioned fun! :) xxx
